Nanolive cell imaging provides a unique label-free solution for visualizing the physical and chemical contact that occurs between cells and materials at a sub-cellular level, and in 3D; an approach that promises to advance tissue engineering and the targeted delivery of therapeutics to tissue.

Imaging the responses of living cells to different surface roughness

Human osteoblast-like cells (MG-63) were imaged for 2 hours; 1 image every 10 s. The video shows how cells interact with smooth and porous polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers.

The cells were imaged using the 3D Cell Explorer. The files used to create this video were kindly provided by Prof. Urszula Stachewicz at the AGH University of Science and Technology (Kraków, Poland).

Tracking the internalization of nanocarriers, in 3D

In this video, we observe the localization of nanocarriers in the mitochondria of U2OS cells. The files used to create this video were kindly provided by Dr. Michal Cifra  from the Institute of Photonics and Electronics Academy of Sciences (Czech Republic).

Capturing mesenchymal stem cell interactions with 3D hydrogels

For this video, mesenchymal stem cells were grown in 3D PEG hydrogels of varying degrees of stiffness, kindly provided by Dr. Sonja Giger and Prof. Matthias Lutolf from EPFL, Switzerland.

One image was taken every 30 seconds. A post-processing colour scale was applied to data in the z-axis, to add spatial information to our images. Blue indicates where the cell is closer to the surface of the gel, while pink indicates where it is further away.
