Welcome to the September edition of the AI for Live Cell Insights Newsletter, bringing you the latest live cell analyses powering drug discovery and cosmetics development. Each month, we will explore a new application of cellular analysis for label-free live cell imaging, with publication highlights and news from Nanolive. This month, we are highlighting the application of Nanolive imaging for kidney disease research, as well as recent publications in the fields of parasitology, immunology and neuroscience, amongst others.
Detecting disease-linked sex differences at the cellular level
Diabetic kidney disease progresses to chronic kidney disease faster in men than women, and for the first time, researchers used Nanolive imaging to detect differences at a cellular level in male and female cells. The group studied the cell surface area and mitochondrial area of male and female human proximal tubular epithelial cells and found significant differences, which correlated to functional assessments of the cells’ glycolysis and oxygen consumption rates. Female cells had a smaller average surface area, as well as lower mitochondrial surface area per cell.
“Sex differences in kidney metabolism may reflect sex-dependent outcomes in human diabetic kidney disease” by Sergi Clotet-Freixas et al. was published in Science Translational Medicine and can be accessed in full here.
Automated analysis of cellular morphology and phenotype
Example cell segmentations carried out from refractive index (RI) holotomographic images.
The high resolution of Nanolive’s label-free holotomographic technology makes it possible to image cellular morphology in unprecedented detail. The quantity and complexity of the images generated allows visualization of biological processes from the population to subcellular level. EVE Analytics is an automatic analysis solution to extract meaningful measurements including cell surface area from these high-content images, forming the backbone of Nanolive’s digital assays for phenotypic analysis, as a push-button tool to segment and measure every cell automatically.
